Developed by Cascais City Council, through the municipal company Cascais Ambiente, in partnership with the Nova School of Business and Economics (SBE), iRec challenged consumers to return empty drinks containers and insert them back into the production cycle of new packaging or products, offering benefits to those who embrace this challenge. iREC helped to temporarily (re)introduce the packaging deposit system, laying the foundations for legislative changes in this area, which are currently under development. For the jury, ‘recognising international initiatives that have a positive impact on government performance and the well-being of society’ is a source of inspiration for others to follow suit,’ hence “recognising and supporting these efforts that are making a tangible difference in the world”.
