How does our public school network function?

In 2022, more than 50% of public schools are located between Alcabideche and Cascais/Estoril (in the case of private schools, 46% are in Cascais/Estoril and 18% in São Domingos de Rana) to which the many pre-school facilities contribute.

More than 19,470 students are part of the Cascais school community in the 2022/2023 school year. Some highlights:

- About 27% are enrolled in secondary education;
- 8% of students have specific educational needs;
- Over 3880 are foreign students, which corresponds to 8% of the resident population of foreign origin in Cascais.

Strategic Policies for Education

Since the conclusion in 2015 of the Inter-administrative Contract for the Delegation of Competencies in the area of Education, the municipality of Cascais has strengthened its proactive role in the involvement of the school community and in enhancing the qualification of the network of facilities.

This public school network, currently under expansion (11 structuring projects involving the upgrading, modernization or construction of new schools will be underway in 2022), is supported by the strategies defined by the Educational Charter and the Municipal Educational Strategic Plan, with an investment of 60 million euros expected by 2025

The need to adjust the network to the reality of the territory is due to the socio-demographic transformation of recent times. Although the population up to 14 years old has decreased by 10.20% in the last 60 years (census data), the population has been more distributed throughout the territory, forcing us to look at the supply and demand needs.
